Cradle of Forestry
The Cradle of Forestry in America is the site of the first forestry school in America, the Biltmore Forest School, founded in 1898 by Dr. Carl Schenck, chief forester for George Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate. Outdoor activities include two guided trails which lead you back in time to seven historical buildings, a 1915 Climax locomotive and the old sawmill.

Holmes Educational State Forest
Holmes is an educational State forest with rugged terrain, numerous rock outcroppings, and scenic vistas. The park also offers a rich mixture of mountain hardwoods, rhododendron, flame azaleas, and a variety of wildflowers.
Jump Off Rock
Jump Off Rock is a scenic overlook which provides a panoramic view of rolling pastures, the Blue Ridge and Pisgah mountain ranges. Located in the Town of Laurel Park.
Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education
Visitors to the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education can view both indoor and outdoor exhibits that focus on Mountain region wildlife. Also view the trout raceways at the adjacent Pisgah Fish Hatchery managed by the Wildlife Commission's Division of Inland Fisheries.
Pisgah National Forest
The Pisgah District is a mecca for vacationers, naturalists and adventurers, offering a wide range of options for your recreating pleasure. Just to mention a few, there's hiking and back-packing, camping, fishing, biking, horse-back riding, swimming, rock-climbing, car-touring, waterfalls, wildlife, historical areas, and a variety of special programs to choose from, including everything from lectures to guided hikes and square dancing.
Sliding Rock
Sliding Rock is a recreation area set up by the US Forest Service. It's a 60' natural rock slide with a 6-7 foot deep pool at the base. Lifeguards and staff are on duty from appr. Memorial Day week end to Labor Day and there is a fee of $1 per person to access the area, which is 7.5 miles north of Hwy 64 on Hwy 276. For more info, call the US Forest Service at 828-877-3350. Kids have to be a certain size to slide alone, otherwise they can sit on the lap of an adult and slide.

Gorges State Park

Lake Lure
The lake is approximately 720 acres, with about twenty-one miles of shoreline. National Geographic has called Lake Lure one of the most beautiful man-made lakes in the world. Located in Western North Carolina, Lake Lure sits in the heart of Hickory Nut Gorge. East of Asheville, the Rocky Broad River tears its way in a series of rapids down through Hickory Nut Gap. This crystal clear water flows through a valley shaped roughly in the form of a Maltese cross to make Lake Lure. Great stretches of water, three long bays, an island of seven acres and many small bays and inlets with a background of tree clad hills and mountains. The climate is unusually good as Lake Lure lies in the "Thermal Belt."
